Use of Acupuncture for Pain
Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, this regulates the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians.
Researchers have developed two hypotheses for how acupuncture relieves pain. One holds that the needle stimulates pain-sensing nerves, which trigger the brain to release opium-like compounds called endorphins that circulate in the body.
The other holds that acupuncture works through a "gate theory" where nerve impulses are disrupted with needling, thus 'breaking' the pain mechanism.
Regardless of the various theories that exist, Acupuncture is one of the most sought-after holistic modalities because it continues to prove its pain relieving benefits.
